Kala Manickam Autobiographical Lens (Brookfield)

The autobiographical lens focuses on my own experiences as a learner and practitioner and how these experiences shape my teaching practice. By reflecting on my personal learning journey, I am able to connect to the beliefs, assumptions, and values that influence the way I teach.

These experiences as a learner, I learned best in environments where the educator was supportive, approachable, and encouraged active participation. I often felt disengaged in classes where learning was lecture-based and learners were not given the opportunity to ask questions or share ideas. These experiences have influenced my teaching approach, as I create a learning environment that is interactive and learner-centered.

Additionally, challenges I faced as a learner, such as fear of making mistakes or lack of confidence, have made me more empathetic toward my learners too. I strive to provide constructive feedback and create a safe space where learners feel comfortable expressing their thoughts.

Reflecting through the autobiographical lens helps me recognize how my past experiences shape my current practice and encourages me to continuously improve as an educator.
